UC Santa Cruz Materials Science & Engineering

Creating new materials for a sustainable future

Our new interdisciplinary research and education graduate programs focusing on new materials for a sustainable future will welcome its first cohort Fall 2024!

The Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) Program at UC Santa Cruz brings together experts in materials synthesis, materials characterization, and theoretical modeling of materials to form research teams that can respond to research opportunities that require a comprehensive approach. MSE aims to accelerate the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and workforce training required to develop new materials used in sustainable technologies. These technologies include energy efficient electronics, efficient light harvesting energy sources, and energy storage devices among others. Materials science and engineering not only provides insights into some of the fundamental properties of complex systems in nature, but also significantly impacts the lives of people by providing avenues for the development of electronic, optical, magnetoelectronic, bioelectronic, and other state-of-the-art devices with new properties.
